We are halfway through the summer already, and if you haven't taken your vacation yet - WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! You can catch a flight to some place tropical, some place cooler, or somewhere new! These are all are great experiences for you and your family, but what about a road trip?
With lower gas prices, many Americans are opting for an epic "Griswold" road trip, foregoing the rising costs of airfare. Once you do have your destination mapped out, it's time to think about securing the home front.
We have a few tips and tricks that can help keep your home safe while you are away!
First and foremost, you want to confirm that all of your windows are locked; be sure to check your windows on the second floor. With window-unit air conditioners, we recommend taking them completely out and simply placing them on the floor nearby. These units can easily be pushed into your home, and criminals know this. Having a locked window is better than a "point of entry". Door and window sensors can actually tell you what windows are open, right on your smartphone.
If you've opted to keep your pets at a kennel, this shouldn't be an issue. As for dogs and cats that will be home alone, they will need someone to feed and walk them while you're away.
Without a SMART HOME: You will need to make sure they have a key, and don't forget to let your neighbors know that they should expect to see someone stopping by while you are away.
With a SMART HOME: Give them a custom key-code that unlocks the front door, and disarms your security system in one motion. You can even see them arrive right on your video door bell and then let them in.
MAKE IT "LOOK LIKE" SOMEONE IS HOME
Criminals are more likely to break in to a home if they know it is empty. They can be fooled using old-school methods like lighting timers, but anyone who has seen Home Alone knows that isn't 100% effective. Using smart lightbulbs, you can stagger the times lights come on (15 minutes apart day by day) or setting them to power on at random can create the illusion of someone being there.
Are you concerned about your online purchases getting dropped on your doorstep while you're away? You should be: as well as being a target for thieves, it indicates that no one's home. With a smart home security system you can simply open your app when your doorbell camera alerts you, verify your driver with one-way video and a quick conversation, then unlock your front door. Once they've left your package inside, you can lock up again and relax. You can also ask them to leave packages out back, in a more secure location like under a patio table, or even in a garden shed.
MITIGATION & SAFETY
When you're home, small problems with your house are easy to spot and deal with. Leave home for a week, though, and a tiny leak in your washing machine hose can become a flood. An open window can cause your AC to run at full steam for days at a time, but not with a smart home! Water sensors let you know if you need to call an emergency plumber—they can even trigger a water shutoff. Your smart thermostat can set itself back until the window is closed. If your smoke detectors are activated, your monitoring station will know what to do.
