Hide The Evidence: Breaking Down Boxes for High-Ticket Items

December 24, 2019

It may be Christmas Eve, but we know this entire week will be full of gift giving and fun and joy and wrapping paper and ribbon and tape and packing peanuts and boxes... that means December 26th, the clean up will begin! Taking care of your wrapping paper and all of those amazon boxes may be pretty standard, but what about those high-ticket items like a gaming console or laptop? How about the massive box that your television came in - are you going to break that down so it fits into your recycling bin?

It may not seem like a safety concern, but stocking your sidewalk with boxes that show off everything you got this Christmas may make you the envy of the block, but it can also make your home a target for some unwanted guests. Think about it - if you put all of these boxes casually on the side walk, directly in front of your home, people driving by will know what's inside. Don't make your home a target; we've got a few different recommendations for staying stealth this post-holiday season.

WHAT NOT TO DO

  • Don't put your trash out on the street too early! Remember, the trash pickup is delayed 1 day because of the holiday, so the shorter the trash is out the better.

  • Don't overfill your trash cans or recycling bins; if the lids fall off due to wind, rain or snow, you could also be exposed.

WHAT TO DO

  • Break boxes down to fit into your recycling bins, void of any brands, logos or visible signs of what may be inside your home. We even recommend cutting boxes up for laptops, gaming consoles and tv's. Criminals know this is a prime time of year, so hiding the evidence is key and staggering when you throw these boxes away will keep your home off their radar.

  • Break down EVERY BOX, even if it's massive. If it doesn't all fit within your trash and recycle bins with the lids on, split it up. The trash man comes every week, so better to be safe than sorry.
