Holiday Returns Made Easy

December 28, 2018

Tis' the season for returning,

fa-la-la-la-laaaaa, where's my receipt?

We take pride in gift giving, doing our best to get our friends and family something they would love... or like... wait, it's the wrong size? An estimated 1 million Christmas gifts are going to be returned between December 25th and New Years Day. This year, with the most sales EVER being made online, package returns will likely break records as well.

This week is commonly known in the retail industry as the busiest week of returns and exchanges throughout the year. Retail stores are restocking shelves to get the right sizes and colors out on display to help you make an easy exchange, but it won't be easy. How can you make a return or exchange without all of the stress? Here are a few tips and tricks that can help make your returns a little easier this year.

START EARLY

Returns and refunds have become as common a tradition as stockings, the tree and even turkey and trimmings. This week, millions of people will take the stores, and malls to swap out a sweater or pair of boots that may have been the wrong size, or a video game that was not quite what they asked for. The best way to beat the crowds is to get there early. When we say early, be there when the store opens. You have two choices: GET UP EARLY or STAND IN LINE FOR HOURS.

This brings us to our second recommendation, and this is essential with keeping yourself calm, relaxed and able to take on the entire day of swapping, returning & repeating.

MAKE A DAY OF IT

Trying to get everything done quickly, when there is so much slowing you down will only work against you. It's going to take time; it's going to take longer than you expected, and there is nothing you can do about it. Take an entire day to make your returns early, go get some brunch between returns, and take it easy. If you are able to give yourself the better part of a Saturday to make returns without having to rush, you are pretty much guaranteed to have enough time to get the gifts you were meant to have!

KNOW YOUR RETURN POLICIES

Some companies don't require instant or immediate returns. Did you know that some holiday sales can allow for returns as late as January 14th? Be sure to read through your receipts to see what the requirements are and timelines look like before heading to the store. If you are able to avoid making returns this week (between Christmas and New Years), you could save yourself the time and stress of heading into the madness of the post-holiday rush!

ONLINE RETURNS

When ordering online, return policies vary. After checking to see what your timelines are, and when you are able to process the return, you will inevitably need to head to the post office, which is also very busy this time of year. When making these returns, be sure to use the same boxes you received your orders in to save a few bucks. If your online orders allow you to to return at a retail location, be sure to check stock online to see if your local store has the size or color you may be looking to exchange for.

RE-GIFTING

This practice has caught on in recent years; giving a gift you received to someone else you think may enjoy it more than you. This is a novel concept and a nice idea, but let's face it, if you got a pumpkin spice candle in your office Yankee Swap and you don't want it, it's no longer a "gift" at this point. It's your stuff that you don't want. Giving it to someone that may enjoy it more than you is still recommended, but it's not a "gift". This becomes you doing something nice for your neighbor that may love pumpkin spice candles, not giving them a re-wrapped gift you don't want.

SMART, SAFE, SIMPLE

The amount of customers ordering gifts online has been consistently on the rise. Some of us have only done online shopping this year, and never even set foot in a retail store! But how do you make sure all of your packages arrive safely and don't get swiped from your front door? If you are increasing your online ordering, you should install a video doorbell. This can help you see when orders arrive, stop porch-pirates from striking, and allow you to communicate with the delivery man through your smartphone. Tell him to "leave that around back", or "hide that behind the planter".

Next year, you will be better prepared and with a smart home security system, professionally installed by American Defense Systems, you can protect your home and see when your packages land on your front door step.
